Find Your Lincoln Color and Lincoln Paint Code

Lincoln Touch Up Paint Colors for Lincoln Paint Repair

Lincoln makes it fairly easy to find the color code. It is always on the drivers door jamb.

Pre 1970 Lincolns can be problematic though. Lincoln was calling different paint colors the exact same name so a Ocean Blue in 1966 was completely different from an Ocean Blue in 1967. Different color code too.

The typical color code format is:

WT/M6640

However, you will rarely ever see the M6640 part which is rarely used. You will typically just see WT. Often the color plate will show EX PT (for Exterior Paint, but I bet you knew this already??) and then above or below this, you will see the color code. To make matters just a tad confusing, sometimes the actual color is embossed on the plate and not where one would expect it.

WT corresponds to Performance White Clearcoat.

Two Tone Combination
Lincoln has many two tone combinations for some cars. Two tones are two different colors on your car.  Lincoln did not do a great job with two tone color coding and often the secondary color information is just missing so this makes it impossible to know without borrowing a color book from us what colors you actually have.

Same Color Code, Different Name
Lincoln, like all manufacturers, uses the exact same color across many models and then will have a different color name for each model. It's the same paint! This is why the color code is so important to order the correct paint.

For example, WT/M6640  above we call Performance White Clearcoat It could also be called White Clearcoat, Speed White  Clearcoat, etc. depending on what the marketing department decided to call it.

How To Repair Damaged Lincoln Paint With Lincoln Touch Up Paint

By following these Lincoln paint repair directions, you can make your Lincoln paint shine again! For more detailed instructions, including how to use Lincoln spray paint, see our Directions for How To Apply Touch Up Paint.

1. Prepare Your Lincoln for Touch Up Paint

Make sure the temperature is over 50 degrees F, then wash the damaged paint on your Lincoln with soap and water. Use a wax and grease remover on the area. Placing masking tape around your scratched Lincoln paint will help protect the surrounding auto paint.

2. Repair Rusted Areas Before Applying Lincoln Touch Up Paint

Remove all traces of rust from your Lincoln with 220 grit sandpaper or a wire brush. Then use rust converter and apply it to the rusted area of your Lincoln.

3. Apply Primer Before Painting Your Lincoln

If you have an unpainted surface on your Lincoln, like bare metal or plastic, apply primer before Lincoln touch up paint! Apply several thin coats of primer to the Lincoln paint you are going to repair. Only apply a small amount of primer to your Lincoln at time. Let the primer dry, overnight if possible, before applying the Lincoln touch up paint. Once dry, lightly sand the primed Lincoln paint area with #220 grit sandpaper followed by #600 wet and dry sandpaper.

4. How to Apply Lincoln Touch Up Paint

You are now ready to apply Lincoln touch up paint to your car. Apply several thin coats of Lincoln touch up paint to build up the damaged paint area to the same depth as the surrounding surface. Let the Lincoln paint dry for ten to twenty minutes between coats.  After the final coat, let the paint dry thoroughly before applying a clearcoat layer. Usually if you let the Lincoln paint dry overnight, it will be dry. If temperatures are below 70 degrees F, allow additional time for the Lincoln touch up paint to dry.

5. Protect Repaired Lincoln Paint with Clearcoat

Make sure the Lincoln touch up paint you applied earlier is dry. Apply several thin coats of clearcoat over the touched up Lincoln paint, drying for ten to twenty minutes between each coat. Let the clearcoat dry overnight, or longer if temperatures are less than 70 degrees F.

6. Use Rubbing Compound to Make Your Lincoln Paint Shine

Rubbing compound will help your Lincoln touch up paint repair become smooth and shiny like the original paint. Let the clearcoat dry for at least three days, then use rubbing compound on your Lincoln. Apply rubbing compound to your Lincoln paint with a clean, soft cloth like an old tee shirt, but not wood products like paper towels. Place a small quantity of rubbing compound on the area where you applied Lincoln touch up paint. Use circular strokes while applying even pressure to the surface. Buff with a clean cloth to a high gloss. For best Lincoln touch up paint results, let your Lincoln's finish dry for thirty days and then apply a good quality automotive wax.
