Hello,

I am considering using the paint pen kit on my 2002 mazda protege (sunlight silver metallic), and have a few questions before I make the plunge:

1) I am planning on using the pen for small chips and scratches on the body and small scratches on the bumper.  Would you recommend buying 2 separate kits, one w/ the flex additive and one without?

2) Is primer ever necessary with the paint pens?

3) Some chips/scratches are accompanied by slight dents.  Are these even worth addressing?  Is it possible to fill the dents by using putty or filler, sanding down, and then spraypainting over?

4) I know metallic paints are notoriously difficult to match w/ the pens, but are light metallics more/less difficult than dark metallics?  and is it easier w/ a relatively newer car, whose coat hasn't faded as much?

Thanks for sharing your expertise!

1) You don't need the flex additive unless you are spraying the paint.
2) All unpainted surfaces need primer whether or not you are spraying or using the paint pen.
3) This is up to you. I personally would fix the dents as it looks much better. Dents need to be worked, then filled with putty, sanded smooth and painted. You will have to spray these areas to get good results as the paint pen or brush will not work.
4) Both light and dark metallics have problems, but if the area is very small, you won't notice it much with either. Probably lighter metallics are more difficult as if the metallic flakes lay wrong, they come out much darker.  See https://www.paintscratch.com/touch-up-paint-directions/blend.htm for more information.

I also have my Arctic Silver Boxster with a nasty "ding" chip in the side where a good for nothing SUV driver threw their oversized door into me.  I hired the Ding Doctor to pull it out, but when they did, a paint chip came with it.  I used a paintpen on it, but it is raised.  I know light shiney silver is tough but what would you do.  Sand the area lightly with 1000 grit and keep trying with the paintpen until I like it and then use rubbing compound from you guys until it is flat or what?

Use rubbing compound to level the surface. Don't use the sandpaper, it will just dull the surrounding finish. This will take a bit of time, but the end result will be a much less noticeable repair.
